Add FAQ
The MAX30102 Pulse Oximeter and Heart-Rate Sensor Module is an upgraded, high-performance optical biometric sensor solution for embedded health diagnostics. Combining dual internal LEDs (Red and Infrared) with a high-sensitivity photodetector, low-noise analog front-end (AFE), and optical glass cover, the MAX30102 measures heart rate in beats per minute (BPM) and peripheral blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) non-invasively through PPG (Photoplethysmography).
The module utilizes an onboard voltage regulation circuit, allowing it to interface smoothly with both 3.3V and 5.0V microcontroller logic systems. By processing light absorption variations as arterial blood pulses through capillaries (finger or earlobe), the MAX30102 converts raw PPG optical data into digital values stored in its internal 32-sample FIFO buffer. Communication takes place over a standard two-wire I2C bus (0x57 slave address), significantly reducing CPU processing overhead on microcontrollers like Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi.
Key Features and Benefits
-
Dual-Wavelength Optical Detection: Integrated Red (660nm) and Infrared (880nm) LEDs enable precise blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse calculation.
-
Onboard 32-Sample FIFO Buffer: Stores optical data onboard to minimize CPU polling interrupts and conserve system power in battery-operated wearables.
-
High Ambient Light Rejection: Built-in optical filter and low-noise circuitry suppress ambient light interference for reliable outdoor and indoor measurements.
-
Ultra-Low Power Operation: Draws under 600μA during active optical sampling and just 0.7μA in shutdown standby mode.
-
Wide Voltage Compatibility: Onboard voltage regulator and level-shifting circuit support 3.3V and 5V logic levels.
-
Glass Enclosure Cover: Physical glass lens protects internal optical components from dust, sweat, and mechanical wear.

INTEGRATION & HARDWARE ADVISORY:
For accurate SpO2 and BPM readings, place the finger lightly against the glass optical window without pressing too firmly. Excessive pressure restricts local capillary blood flow and distorts the PPG waveform.
Some breakout boards include 1.8V or 4.7kΩ pull-up resistors on the I2C bus. When connecting to 5V Arduino boards, ensure proper level shifting or verify pull-up resistor configurations to avoid I2C bus conflicts.
