Detailed Description
The YDLIDAR X2 2D LiDAR Sensor is a highly efficient, entry-level dimensional scanning platform developed by the EAI Technology team. It is designed to lower the barrier to entry for spatial tracking in robotics and automated industrial platforms. Operating on the proven principle of optical triangulation, the sensor combines a small infrared point-pulse laser with an advanced internal optical lens array. As the upper mechanical housing rotates a full 360 degrees, the transceiver calculates distance changes in real time. This data outputs as a continuous stream of polar coordinate points to build detailed structural maps of surrounding indoor environments.
The X2 is optimized for excellent stability and low power consumption. It sample lines at a ranging frequency of up to 3000Hz (3000 samples per second). This performance allows autonomous mobile robots to capture shifting obstacles instantly. It handles a diverse distance profile tracking down to 12 cm all the way up to 8 meters on standard reflective items. For communication, the board features a 3.3V level serial port (UART interface). This interface allows you to easily parse clean data arrays into single-board development hubs like Raspberry Pi boards, Nvidia Jetson nodes, or x86 micro PCs.

How to Use
⚠️ POWER SUPPLY ADVICE: The startup current of the LiDAR motor can spike up to 1000mA. Standard computer USB host ports often brown out during initialization. It is highly recommended to use the included breakout adapter board and connect a separate auxiliary +5V power supply to prevent data corruption or drops.
-
Hardware Interfacing: Attach the YDLIDAR X2 to the matching USB breakout converter board via the integrated MX1.25-4P plug harness.
-
Auxiliary Power Injection: Plug a high-quality Micro-USB data cable from the converter board's
USB_DATAport into your PC/SBC. If your platform drops the connection during motor spin-up, provide dedicated 5V power into the auxiliary power port. -
Workspace Configuration: Clone the official
ydlidar_ros_driverpackage files into your active ROS/ROS2srcworkspace directory, then compile usingcatkin_makeorcolcon build. -
Launch and Visualization: Set your serial port execution permissions (
sudo chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB0). Run the default X2 node launch script (roslaunch ydlidar_ros_driver X2.launch) to view real-time point clouds inside RViz.
Applications
-
Robot Navigation & Obstacle Avoidance: Acts as the primary vision sensor for automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and service robots to safely navigate complex environments.
-
Academic ROS Teaching and Research: Provides a cost-effective platform for university laboratories and students learning SLAM mapping and path planning.
-
Environmental 3D Reconstruction: Combines 2D laser sweeps with vertical linear actuators to construct volumetric 3D models of indoor spaces.
