DRV8825 Stepper Motor Driver Module with Aluminum Heat Sink
Upgrade your 3D printer and CNC motion control systems with the DRV8825 Stepper Motor Driver Module with Aluminum Heat Sink. Built on Texas Instruments' high-performance DRV8825 IC, this breakout board offers higher current handling and smoother stepping performance than legacy A4988 drivers. Supporting up to 45V motor input and 2.5A peak current per coil (1.5A-1.8A continuous with active cooling), it provides ultra-fine 1/32 microstepping for high-precision, low-noise positioning. Complete with an adjustable trimmer potentiometer for current limiting and a pre-sized aluminum heat sink, it fits directly into RAMPS 1.4, CNC Shields, and standard 16-pin Pololu-compatible sockets.

Add FAQ
The DRV8825 Stepper Motor Driver Module is a high-power, feature-rich microstepping breakout board engineered for precision control of bipolar stepper motors, such as NEMA 17 and light-duty NEMA 23 motors. Powered by Texas Instruments' DRV8825 IC, this driver serves as a direct drop-in replacement for standard A4988 modules on RAMPS 1.4/1.6, MKS Gen, and Arduino CNC shields, offering enhanced thermal performance and higher supply voltage operation.
The module features an integrated 4-layer PCB with heavy copper traces to maximize heat dissipation from the DRV8825 IC's thermal pad. It supports 6 distinct step resolutions: full-step, half-step, 1/4-step, 1/8-step, 1/16-step, and 1/32-step. An onboard trimmer potentiometer allows users to set maximum current limits precise to their motor's specifications (IMax=VREF×2), protecting the motor windings against thermal degradation. The included aluminum heatsink maintains low junction temperatures under continuous high-torque operation.
Key Features and Benefits
-
High Voltage & Current Rating: Supports motor operating voltages up to 45V DC and delivers up to 2.5A peak output current per coil.
-
Ultra-Fine 1/32 Microstepping: Advanced microstepping modes dramatically reduce motor resonance, vibration, and mechanical noise during slow feeds.
-
Drop-in Footprint Compatibility: Standard 16-pin DIP header layout is fully pin-compatible with Pololu A4988 sockets across 3D printer mainboards and CNC shields.
-
Adjustable Current Limiting: Onboard potentiometer enables precise current adjustments (VREF) to prevent motor overheating.
-
Complete Protection Suite: Built-in over-temperature shutdown (TSD), under-voltage lockout (UVLO), over-current protection (OCP), and short-circuit protection to ground/supply.
-
Included Aluminum Heat Sink: High-conductivity heatsink with thermal adhesive tape maintains optimal cooling during long print/milling jobs.

Pinout & Wiring Guide
1. Power & Motor Pins:
-
VMOT & GND: Motor Power Supply (+8.2V to +45V DC) & Power Ground
-
1A/1B: Stepper Motor Coil A Terminals
-
2A/2B: Stepper Motor Coil B Terminals
2. Control Logic Pins:
-
STEP: Step Clock Input (Each pulse advances motor by one microstep)
-
DIR: Direction Input (High = Clockwise / Low = Counter-Clockwise)
-
ENABLE: Logic Input (Low = Driver Outputs Enabled; High = Outputs Disabled)
-
RESET & SLEEP: Internal Logic Inputs (Must be tied together or pulled HIGH for operation)
-
M0,M1,M2: Microstep Mode Selector Pins (Pulled HIGH/LOW to set microstep resolution)
3. Current Limit Calibration (VREF):
-
Example: For a 1.5A rated NEMA 17 motor, adjust the potentiometer until VREF=0.75V (measured between multimeter positive lead on the potentiometer screw and negative lead on GND).
HARDWARE & ORIENTATION WARNING:
Orientation Caution: Unlike the A4988, the DRV8825 potentiometer sits on the opposite side of the board. Inserting the DRV8825 backwards into a RAMPS or CNC shield socket will instantly destroy both the driver IC and motherboard control lines. Always check pin silk-screen labels (GND, VMOT) before powering on!
Power Spikes: Always connect a large electrolytic capacitor (100μF rated for 50V) across VMOT and GND close to the board to absorb inductive voltage spikes.
